ON TOPIC, what where pin ball games like before flippers?
OFF TOPIC, no reason to go back to the moon with humans, since robots can do the job better and cheaper, and we have no way of staying there long term; there was some experiment a while back of a self contained colony enclosure on Earth somewhere in the US desert where they tried to produce their own food, water, and air. I can’t find the article, but they had to abandon it because the air became toxic after a very short time. I agree that they need to figure out how to live in a hostile environment closer to Earth than jumping out to Mars unless the only reason to go to Mars is to say we did it and then abandon the project because it costs too much or is too hard to do long term. It will be hundreds of years if not a thousand before we can colonize Mars.
Especially if we can’t RAISE taxes, pay OFF our dept (not just not adding to it) AND fund NASA to the tune of 10 times it’s current budget. Never mind the education crisis, the infrastructure crisis, and the job outsourcing/ insourcing war on the middle class crisis.

So what about the protection on the other capsules that stayed up for days? if you go there the whole program is a hoax. The Apollo suits were multiple layers, same principle as the old Israeli metal/plywood sandwich armor....the sum blocks much greater forces than individual components would.Originally Posted by bowtie427ss

Again, i really only have questions. And, of course i have no doubt we were there, we left plenty of garbage behind for evidence, as man does pretty much everywhere he goes. To see one of the rovers, and it's tracks will be an interesting revelation when it comes.So what about the protection on the other capsules that stayed up for days?
I was around some of this stuff as a kid, relatives were nasa employees. I was too young to have any appreciation or really concept even of some of the things i was able to physically put my hands on at different times.
One of my most vivid memories is of touching, and seeing the heat shield of a capsule after re-entry, kind of a rough cast iron like surface dotted with droplets of once molten glass, which today i assume is the remains of a fiberglass covering. Apparently things get warm coming back down.
When something comes down, it loses the kinetic energy that put it up. You are right, fiberglass mat was used to keep the ablative material together. It would vaporize, sacrificing itself while carrying heat away from the capsule. it is thought the Apollo astronauts had a high rate of cancer, but the quantitative sample total is too small to get real stats...we would certainly know if folks stayed there. Long term damage may prohibit it.

That's easy- 1940's technology could have done it mechanically. The rate of climb is known, it could have been turned on by the launch command.

Indeed, and by the late 60's the technology that was available to nasa and the military would be equivalent to late 80's consumer technology or beyond in many aspects. Photography is certainly an area where they enjoyed the very latest and best stuff for a long time, to this day even.
Of course, that would also give them the ability to "create" some pretty convincing images if that became a necessary step in any particular program, wouldn't it?
The video of the lauch is in color. Apollo 11 only had black and white camera. This is from a later Apollo flight (15,16 or 17) taken from the rover that had a remote controlled color fast scan camera (RCA I beleive). Looks like the video is taken from many Apollo flights edited together.
